Make the first few lines specific

Your profile should help a homeowner decide whether to contact you. Start with the trade, the work you most want to do and the areas you actually serve. A decorator specialising in occupied homes has something more useful to say than a business claiming to handle every project everywhere. Write as you would explain your business to a new customer on the telephone.

Give a realistic sense of scale. If you take on repairs as well as larger installations, say so. If your diary is mainly planned projects and you do not offer emergency call-outs, make that clear. You do not need to list every tool or training course in the introduction. Put the details where they answer a customer's question about a particular service.

Turn a service name into a useful explanation

A service list helps people find you, but a few short explanations help them understand the fit. For fitted storage, describe the kinds of spaces you work in and how an initial design discussion happens. For exterior painting, explain what information you need before arranging a visit. Keep the wording within your actual experience and avoid promising a result that depends on a survey.

List service areas you can reliably cover. A long list of distant towns may create enquiries you cannot serve and leave customers wondering whether you are local. Explain any genuine travel limits or differences between small jobs and larger projects. Review those details when your working area changes rather than leaving a broad claim indefinitely.

Give photographs an accurate story

Choose photographs of work you have permission to show and can accurately explain. For each project, record what your business did, what the customer needed and which details mattered. If you installed the joinery but did not design the room or complete the electrical work, say so. A specific description is more convincing and more useful than a row of images with no context.

Ask the customer before publishing images of their home and agree what can be shown. Check for faces, number plates, paperwork, security equipment and other personal details in the frame. Keep private access information out of descriptions. Avoid naming a precise home address when a general area is enough to explain the project. Keep a record of permissions with your original images.

  • What did the customer want to change?
  • Which parts did your business complete?
  • What practical constraint did you work around?
  • What does this example help a future customer understand?

Make claims easy to check

Use your correct business details and keep contact information current. If you mention professional membership, registration or insurance, give accurate details and keep them updated. Avoid writing fully qualified as a substitute for saying which qualification relates to which work. Customers should be able to follow the information and ask sensible questions.

Explain the customer journey in plain language: how to make an enquiry, what details to send, whether you normally arrange a site visit and how you provide a proposal. Only promise response times you can maintain. If you are away or fully booked, update your availability or reply with a clear next step. A maintained profile should help your existing recommendations as well as introduce you to new visitors.

Earn useful feedback and keep expectations realistic

Invite customers to describe their own experience after work rather than asking them to copy a prepared endorsement. Do not invent reviews, rewrite criticism into praise or present a review from one service as proof of another. If a platform offers review submission, follow its verification and moderation process. A customer should understand where a rating came from and what it represents.

Get a Trades Quote is beginning with directory discovery and business mini-websites. A profile does not guarantee enquiries or a particular position in Google. The proposed Founding 100 offer gives the first 100 approved businesses six months of enhanced membership from publication, with no payment details or automatic charge. Afterwards, the proposed choice is £9 a month for enhanced membership or a free basic listing. Confirm the published offer terms before joining, and use the initial period to make your page useful enough to share directly with customers.
